Six hours from the nearest fire technician

A residential aged care home on the Far South Coast of NSW was losing days to fault callouts and money to unwanted alarms. Connecting Magnifire to the existing fire panel changed both.

When the panel went into fault, the only information available was what showed on its display: an address, a short descriptor, a time. That was enough to know something was wrong, but rarely enough for a technician six hours away to know what to put on the truck.

The pattern was predictable and expensive. Drive down, diagnose, find the part isn't on board, drive back, return another day. Two round trips and twenty-four hours of travel, with an isolation sitting on the system the whole time.

Alarms had the same problem in reverse. Staff had to reach the panel, read the address, then work out where that device actually sat in the building, while residents who need help to move waited on the answer.

A run of unwanted alarms meant recurring brigade charges, and the history needed to support a waiver was reconstructed weeks later from paper records.

Magnifire connects to the printer port of the existing panel and captures every event it reports: alarms, faults, isolations, pre-alarms and restores, each with a device address and timestamp. It then pushes them out by SMS and app in real time.

Nothing changes on the fire system. There is no alteration to panel programming, cause and effect, or the monitored signalling path to FRNSW. Every device was mapped against the site's floor plans, so an address arrives as a pin in a named room rather than a number to look up.

One trip, one fix

The contractor sees the device, loop, fault type and how long it has been intermittent before anyone gets in a vehicle. The right part goes on the truck first time. The diagnose-then-return cycle largely disappeared, and isolation periods shortened with it.

Faults resolved on site

With the faulted detector pinned on a floor plan and a plain-language descriptor beside it, the home's own maintenance team can handle straightforward changeovers under the contractor's guidance, who sees the same data remotely. A dirty head is dealt with that day rather than next month.

Wardens know where before they move

Area wardens carry the app. On activation they get the initiating device and its location within seconds, wherever they are on site, so they know which wing and which corridor before reaching the panel. That decides who needs assistance and whether anyone moves at all. It works just as well at 3am.

Nurses and maintenance find the detector, not the zone

On the site map the device that set the alarm off is highlighted on the floor plan, down to the room. Nursing and maintenance staff go straight to that detector to check whether it is a real event or a nuisance activation such as steam or an aerosol, rather than walking a wing working out which head tripped.

Fewer alarms, and the evidence to match

Detectors that drift or foul report a fault long before they activate. Those now surface immediately, so they are cleaned or swapped while still a maintenance item, rather than after they have brought a pump to Pambula. Every brigade attendance is logged with the events either side of it.

Compliance evidence they hold

Test mode captures each test session from the panel and tracks it against AS 1851 frequencies, so the home has its own AFSS evidence rather than waiting on a contractor's sheet.

Every isolation, visible

The dashboard shows what is isolated right now and for how long. That is the first thing an auditor asks about, and it used to be invisible from the office.

Waivers as an export

The waiver tracker drafts the NSW s.43 letter with the event history attached and the 180-day deadline flagged, so a $1,656 charge is contested in minutes instead of reconstructed from paper.

Being six hours from our fire contractor used to make a fault a two-day exercise. Now they know what is wrong before they leave, and it is sorted in one visit.
